Product Condition
Used Parts: Condition & What to Expect
Every product sold by Chicago JDM Auto Parts is a used component removed from a vehicle in Japan, unless the listing clearly says otherwise. "Used" means the part has served in a previous vehicle — not that it is damaged or has failed. Many JDM engines and transmissions come from well-maintained, lower-mileage Japanese vehicles, but no used part can be guaranteed to last indefinitely or perform exactly like a new one.
| Part category | Expected condition | How it is checked | What you should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| JDM engines (complete) | Used, from a running donor vehicle. Surface rust, minor oil seepage, and aged hoses are normal. | Visually inspected and compression and leak tested before listing. Not torn down internally unless the listing says so. | Professional installation; have a qualified mechanic inspect it before installing. |
| Transmissions | Used, removed from a donor vehicle. Grime, surface corrosion, and seal weeping are common. | Visually inspected for case damage and leaks. Shifting is not tested after removal unless stated. | Check fluid and seals before installation; a professional inspection is strongly advised. |
| Suspension & steering | Used; bushings, boots, and ball joints show wear consistent with mileage. | Visual inspection. Components are not measured unless stated. | Inspect rubber parts for cracking and replace wear items during installation. |
| Differentials & transfer cases | Used and removed complete. External seepage and surface corrosion are expected. | Visual inspection. Gear backlash and clutch packs are not measured unless stated. | Drain and inspect the fluid; replace seals before installing. |
| ECUs & electrical | Used; connector pins may show oxidation and harness condition varies. | Not bench-tested unless the listing says so. | Match the exact part number before buying. Electrical parts carry no warranty. |
Warranty
Warranty Limitations
Used replacement and performance engines carry a 30-day limited warranty and used replacement transmissions a 90-day limited warranty on internal parts, as explained in our Warranty Policy. Electrical and electronic parts, used performance transmissions, and other parts are sold as-is unless a listing states otherwise.
Our listings — descriptions, documented mileage, and compatibility information — are accurate to the best of our knowledge based on the import documentation available when the item is listed, and covered units carry our written limited warranty.
We make no promise about how long a used part will last or how it will perform after installation beyond the written warranty, and we do not cover labor, towing, rental vehicles, lost wages, or other consequential costs.
Any warranty is void if the part is installed without a qualified technician, proper tools, and correct torque specifications, or if it is modified, used outside its intended application, or damaged by improper installation, oil starvation, overheating, a failed timing belt, or incorrect break-in. Report any problem within the timeframes in our Return & Refund Policy and Warranty Policy.
Fitment
Vehicle Compatibility & Fitment
JDM parts come from Japanese-market vehicles that often share platforms with US models but can differ in important details. Compatibility information in our listings is general guidance based on manufacturer specifications and import documentation. It cannot account for every regional variation, mid-cycle update, special edition, or optional equipment package.
Before you order
- Match the engine or transmission code to your vehicle's factory specifications — not just the model name and year.
- Confirm the transmission type (automatic or manual) and drive type (FWD, RWD, or AWD).
- Check that sensors, accessory drives, and mounting points will work with your US-market vehicle.
- Talk to a mechanic experienced with JDM swaps.
- Contact us with questions before you buy — not after.
Common JDM vs. US-market differences
- Power output, compression ratio, and fuel octane requirements.
- Sensor connectors, O2 sensor ports, and emissions fittings.
- Transmission gear ratios, which can affect speedometer readings.
- Accessory brackets, power steering pump, and A/C compressor mounts.
- ECU programming — a JDM ECU may need reprogramming or a compatible US-spec ECU.
We are not responsible for parts ordered for the wrong vehicle. Fitment-related returns follow our Return & Refund Policy and Cancellation Policy.

Mileage Disclosure & Documentation
Japan's strict vehicle inspection system (known as "shaken") encourages owners to replace vehicles earlier, which is why many JDM engines and transmissions have lower mileage than comparable US parts. We cannot, however, independently verify every mileage figure supplied by Japanese auctions and dismantlers.
Documented mileage
- Mileage figures and ranges shown in listings come from the auction or dismantler documentation supplied with the unit in Japan.
- Japanese odometers read in kilometers; we convert to miles (1 km = 0.621 miles).
- The figure reflects the odometer reading when the vehicle was auctioned or dismantled.
- We pass this documentation on in good faith but cannot certify it beyond what the documents state.
Undocumented mileage
- Where no reliable documentation was available, the listing says "mileage unknown" or "undocumented".
- We make no statement about the actual mileage of these units; treat them as used parts of unknown age.
- Their pricing reflects that uncertainty.
The federal odometer law (49 U.S.C. § 32701 et seq.) applies to the sale of complete vehicles, not individual parts. We follow its spirit: we never misrepresent mileage, we disclose when it is undocumented, and we pass on the documentation we have.

OEM Brand & Trademark Disclaimer
Chicago JDM Auto Parts is an independent seller of used automotive parts. We are not an authorized dealer, affiliate, partner, or licensee of any vehicle manufacturer. Brand names, model names, engine codes, and manufacturer names — including Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Nissan, Infiniti, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and Kia — appear on jdmmotorschicago.com only to describe compatibility and the vehicles parts came from. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.
What "OEM" means here
"OEM" or "original equipment" means the part was made by or for the vehicle manufacturer and installed at the factory. Our parts are genuine factory components removed from donor vehicles in Japan and sold through an independent business — not through the manufacturer's authorized dealer network.
Liability
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the total liability of Chicago JDM Auto Parts for any claim related to a product is limited to the price you paid for that product. Under any legal theory — contract, tort, strict liability, negligence, or warranty — we are not liable for:
Consequential damages
Damage to other vehicle components, systems, or fluids caused by a failed or incompatible part after installation.
Incidental damages
Diagnostic fees, towing, shop labor, rental vehicles, or storage fees.
Indirect damages
Business losses, missed appointments, or reputational harm caused by vehicle downtime.
Lost profits
Income lost because a vehicle was out of service or a project was delayed.
Punitive damages
Enhanced or exemplary damages of any kind.
Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages in consumer sales. If you live in one of them, these limits apply only to the extent the law allows, and your statutory consumer rights are not affected.
Back to contentsLegal Compliance
Emissions, Legal Use & Regulatory Compliance
JDM engines and drivetrain parts were built to Japanese emissions standards, which differ from those enforced in the US by the EPA under the Clean Air Act and in California by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). You alone are responsible for confirming that a part complies with the emissions and equipment rules where your vehicle is registered, and for obtaining any approvals before installation. We make no claim that a part is emissions-compliant unless its listing says so.
Federal — EPA
The Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. § 7401 et seq.) prohibits installing an engine or component that makes a road vehicle non-compliant with federal emissions standards.
California — CARB
Most JDM engine swaps are not CARB-legal for California-registered road vehicles without an Executive Order (EO) exemption. We cannot advise on specific CARB compliance.
State inspections
An engine swap can cause a failed inspection if the engine does not match the vehicle's records or cannot meet the state's emissions requirements. Check before you buy.
Off-road & competition
JDM engines are popular in race, track, and off-road vehicles that are never registered for road use. Compliance with sanctioning-body or event rules remains your responsibility.
